“The root cause of the hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes is high insulin resistance.” ~ Dr. Jason Fung

Diabetes is a Complex Condition

Diabetes is a complex condition with multiple factors contributing to its development.

The top causes of diabetes can be classified into two main types:

  1. Type 1 diabetes
  2. Type 2 diabetes

We will review both in greater detail below.

Top Causes of Type 1 Diabetes and Type 2 Diabetes

Type 1 Diabetes

1. Autoimmune Response

In Type 1 diabetes, the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing cells (beta cells) in the pancreas.

The exact cause of this autoimmune response is not fully understood, but it is believed to result from a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental triggers, such as viral infections.

Type 2 Diabetes

1. Insulin Resistance

Type 2 diabetes is primarily characterized by insulin resistance, where the body’s cells become less responsive to insulin, leading to elevated blood sugar levels.

The causes of insulin resistance are multifactorial and can include genetic factors, excess body weight, a sedentary lifestyle, poor diet (especially high sugar and refined carbohydrate intake), and chronic inflammation.

2. Genetic Predisposition

Family history and genetics play a role in Type 2 diabetes risk.

Certain gene variants can increase the likelihood of developing insulin resistance and diabetes. However, genetic factors alone cannot cause the condition, and lifestyle factors often interact with a genetic predisposition.

3. Obesity and Excess Weight

Being overweight or obese is a significant risk factor for Type 2 diabetes.

Excess body fat, particularly abdominal fat, contributes to insulin resistance and disrupts glucose regulation.

4. Sedentary Lifestyle

Lack of physical activity and a sedentary lifestyle can increase the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Regular exercise helps improve insulin sensitivity, promotes weight management, and contributes to overall metabolic health.

5. Unhealthy Diet

Diets high in processed foods, sugary beverages, unhealthy fats, and refined carbohydrates can contribute to insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes.

Poor dietary choices can lead to weight gain, inflammation, and metabolic imbalances.

It’s important to note that gestational diabetes, a type of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy, is another form of diabetes influenced by hormonal changes during pregnancy and typically resolves after childbirth.

Next Steps to Addressing Diabetes

While these factors are associated with the development of diabetes, it’s essential to remember that each individual’s risk and circumstances can vary.

Making positive lifestyle choices, such as maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in regular physical activity, and following a balanced diet, can help reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

If you have concerns about diabetes or related risk factors, it’s recommended to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized guidance.
